Understanding NDIS Plan: Funding, Goals and Supports

An NDIS plan is more than just paperwork — it’s a personalised roadmap designed to help participants access the supports they need to live more independently and achieve their goals.

What an NDIS Plan Is

Every NDIS plan is created in collaboration between NDIA planners and participants. It outlines the funding available to purchase supports that make everyday life easier and help you work toward your personal goals. Plans are reviewed regularly — either at a scheduled reassessment date or when your circumstances change.

What NDIS Plans Are For

Each plan is a package of supports that work alongside informal, community, and mainstream services. Supports included in your plan must be:

  • Based on the information and evidence you provide
  • Aligned with NDIS funding rules
  • Considered reasonable and necessary, and directly related to your disability

The total funding amount depends on the type of supports, their cost, whether they’re shared, and how often they’re needed.

Goals in Your NDIS Plan

Your goals are central to your plan. They help the NDIA understand what matters most to you and guide the supports you receive. Goals can:

  • Highlight your strengths and how to use them
  • Motivate you to try new things and build independence
  • Provide measurable milestones to track progress

Funding and Support Budgets

Your plan outlines your total funding amount and explains which support budgets are included. These may cover:

  • Core supports for daily living
  • Capacity building supports to develop skills and independence
  • Capital supports for equipment or housing modifications

Some supports are flexible, meaning you can choose how to spend the funding. Others are stated, meaning the funding must be used exactly as described in your plan.

Your plan also explains how funding will be managed — whether by you, a plan manager, or the NDIA. It includes details about your situation, your supports, your funding components, and how to request changes if needed. Once approved, your plan is available in the participant portal.

The Role of NDIS Service Providers

An NDIS plan is only the beginning. Once your plan is approved, the next step is choosing the right service provider to help you bring it to life.

  • Guidance and Navigation: Providers help participants understand their plan, connect with supports, and make informed choices.
  • Personalised Care: From daily living assistance to psychosocial disability supports, providers tailor services to your unique goals.
  • Housing and Environment: Supported Independent Living (SIL) and accessible housing options ensure participants feel safe and confident in familiar spaces.
  • Confidence and Independence: Providers transform funding into meaningful outcomes — building skills, encouraging community participation, and fostering independence.

By partnering with the right NDIS service provider, participants can turn their plan into a pathway toward stronger wellbeing, confidence, and independence.
