To become an NDIS participant, you need to meet several eligibility criteria — and one of the most important is age. Understanding these requirements helps families and individuals know whether they can apply for it.
Anyone applying for the NDIS must be younger than 65 on the day they apply. This is a legal requirement under NDIS legislation and applies to everyone, regardless of disability type. Proof of age is required when submitting an application.
Children Younger Than 9
Children under 9 can access the NDIS through the early childhood approach.
- Children younger than 6 with developmental delay may be eligible under the early intervention requirements.
- Children younger than 9 with disability may be eligible under the disability requirements, early intervention requirements, or both.
- Early childhood partners help families navigate the application process and connect with supports.
Adults Aged 9 to 64
If you are aged 9 to 64, you may be eligible if you also meet the residency and disability requirements. NDIS partners can guide you through the application and help tailor supports to your personal goals.
After You Turn 65
If you are 65 or older, you cannot apply for the NDIS. Instead, you may be eligible for aged care supports.
- If you are already an NDIS participant before turning 65, you can choose to continue with NDIS supports or transition to aged care.
- You cannot use both NDIS and aged care supports at the same time.
- If you move into residential aged care after turning 65, you will need to leave the NDIS.
Why Age Requirements Matter
The NDIS is designed to support people with disability who meet all eligibility criteria. Age requirements ensure that participants receive the right type of support at the right stage of life — whether through early intervention, disability supports, or aged care services.
